INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY

As a leading technology development and licensing company in the OLED field, our goal is to make our proprietary OLED technologies the number one choice for generations of flat panel displays, lighting and organic electronics. We strive to develop technologies that provide unique features and competitive advantage. UniversalPHOLED® technology — able to offer significant energy savings and environmental benefits to displays and lighting — is an excellent example.

With over $150M invested in OLED research over the past decade, Universal Display has built a strong worldwide patent portfolio. With over 1000 patents issued and pending worldwide, our portfolio is one of the largest in the OLED field.

Arising from technological innovations at Universal Display as well as from 1) our sponsored research at Princeton University, the University of Southern California and, recently, the University of Michigan, and 2) our acquisition of license rights to OLED patents owned by Motorola, Inc., our core technologies include OLED device designs and architectures, proprietary materials and processing technologies covering the following key areas.

  • Phosphorescent OLED technology and materials
  • Transparent/Top-emitting OLED technology
  • Flexible OLED technology
  • White OLED technology
  • Stacked OLED technology
  • Organic Vapor Phase Deposition technology
  • Ink-jet printing and other high-resolution patterning technologies
  • Active-matrix OLED display architectures and other drive circuit designs
  • Optical extraction techniques for enhanced power efficiency
  • OLED device packaging technology, including monolithic encapsulation

The combined strength of these patents is compelling for products ranging from relatively simple cell phone displays to TVs and lighting applications. With continued innovations, we’ll be able to turn visions for future generations of OLEDs and organic electronics into reality.
